Limarko Group's Gift to Klaipėda University: an Investment Project for an Academic Campus

Limarko UAB, celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, will commemorate its anniversary with a charitable act. The company will finance the preparation of an investment project for the development of the territory managed by Klaipėda University (KU). The Letter of Intent to this effect was signed by Vytautas Lygnugaris, Director General of Limarko Shipping Company AB, and prof. dr Artūras Razbadauskas, Rector of KU. The signing of the document, which is considered to be significant for the development of both KU and the whole city, was attended by the Mayor of Klaipėda Arvydas Vaitkus.

The initiative to develop an investment plan for the KU academic campus was born in the KU Future Support Fund. A company of Limarko Group, one of the founders of the Fund, expressed its wish to make a gift of 30,000 euros to the University, which would have a lasting value and provide future prospects.

KU manages almost 23 hectares of land at 84 Herkaus Manto Street under a commodatum agreement. More than a decade ago, a detail plan was drawn up for this area. According to the plan, the Marine Research Institute and the KU Business Incubator have been built on the KU campus, and the construction of the second dormitory is about to start. The need for an investment plan was dictated by the prospects for the possible development of the KU campus, which were set out in the document but not detailed. A professionally prepared study should provide answers to the questions of which possible scenarios for the development of the KU academic campus would be most effective and beneficial not only for the University, but also for the entire city community.

According to Vytautas Adomaitis, the head of the KU Future Support Fund, together with Limarko Group, which is donating the study to the University, it has been decided that the document will be prepared by May next year. Responsible officials of the Klaipėda City Municipality Administration have been invited to contribute to its preparation, thus ensuring that the plan reflects the city's interest and is in line with the existing vision of Klaipėda's future.

KU Rector prof. dr. Artūras Razbadauskas thanked the patrons for their initiative to contribute to the prospects of the KU academic campus. "It is important for us that this space is attractive not only to prospective students from Klaipėda and Western Lithuania. We want people from all over Lithuania to come here to study and to successfully realise themselves and build their careers in our city. The fact that business and the City Municipality are contributing to the development of these plans shows a common vision and the ability to work together for the benefit of the city", said prof. Razbadauskas after signing the document.

Vytautas Lygnugaris, the head of Limarko Group, said that it has become a company tradition to mark its anniversaries by doing meaningful work. "When celebrating the 25th anniversary, we donated outdoor musical instruments for children with disabilities to Klaipėda Medeinė School. We are currently in close contact with the University and see the need to contribute to its development. Who more if not all of us? As a citizen of Klaipėda, I am glad that you accept such a gift of ours", emphasised the author of the initiative.

Arvydas Vaitkus, the Mayor of Klaipėda, welcomed the intentions of the signatories of the Letter of Intent. He promised the assistance of the Municipality's specialists in the preparation of the study. "The Municipality's specialists will certainly assist and help in the implementation of the project, which is important for both the University and the city communities. It is important to cooperate in order to avoid making mistakes that would cost us both time and money," said the Mayor of Klaipėda.
