“International Dinner”: from music and dance to unexpected engagement

On April 3, 2026, Klaipeda University (KU) hosted its “International Dinner” at the Stasys Vaitekūnas Aula – an event that fosters community, cultural diversity, and openness to different cultures, bringing together students from around the world and members of the academic community each year. Participants gathered around a shared table, enjoying Lithuanian dishes alongside traditional foods prepared by students from their home countries, while sharing stories about their homelands, customs, and everyday life. The warm atmosphere was created not only by flavors and conversations, but also by live music and dancing that filled the space with energy and joy.

The performance by KU’s folk art ensemble “Vytinė” received enthusiastic applause. The group not only presented Lithuanian folk music and dances, but also engaged the audience – students eagerly joined circle dances and learned the steps of traditional Lithuanian folk dances.

International students also showcased their talents and cultural performances. Mariam from Georgia played the piano, Orkhan and Nasrin from Azerbaijan performed a folk dance, three Marias from Georgia presented a traditional dance program, and Michael from Ghana delighted the audience with a popular Lady Gaga song. The musical atmosphere of the evening was shaped by Abdellah from Morocco. Even when the music paused for a moment, dancing quickly resumed – students from different countries taught one another their traditional dances, inviting everyone to join and celebrate cultural diversity together.

This year’s event also featured unexpected and emotional moments – at the end of the evening, accompanied by Michael’s guitar, two students from Morocco got engaged, receiving a round of enthusiastic applause.

The “International Dinner” at Klaipeda University is held every semester and continues to bring together an ever-growing community. This year, students from Germany, Italy, Greece, France, Georgia, Turkey, Romania, India, Morocco, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, and various African countries took part. The event aims to foster multiculturalism, encourage intercultural dialogue, and create a space where new friendships can easily be formed – without borders or stereotypes.
