The aim of this study is to discuss typology and statistics of nails, which were found during the 2014 archaeological investigations of Klaipėda castle. A total number of 13072 metal nails were found during excavations. Many of these nails have distinctive types. The first part of this paper is focused on data related to the use of nails during the earliest stages of human history, as well as on information concerning manufacturing and usage of these tools in Europe and USA during the 18th-19th centuries. Furthermore, historiographical data about nails from Lithuanian archaeological studies was overviewed which revealed that only a few publications describe nails in significant detail. As mentioned before, during the 2014 archaeological excavations of Klaipėda castle, more than 13000 metal nails were found. This study presents results from the analysis of nail types. A total of 22 nail types were distinguished according to the shape of nail’s head. Types A (1820 pieces), L (794 pieces) and V (2073 pieces) made up the biggest group, while types R (10 pieces) and V 1 (13 pieces) consisted of smallest number of finds. Results received from statistical and typological analyses lead to further investigations regarding their function. This question could not be addressed earlier due to a lack of thorough studies. Results of statistical analysis illustrates the total number and types of nails gathered during the 2014 archaeological excavations at the Klaipėda castle. Moreover, it presents the primary picture of the total number of nails used. This particular type of archaeological material will be investigated further in the future studies. It is also worth noting that this material can provide significant information about the development ofKlaipėda castle and the old town.
