Abstract
In recent years 3D ground penetrating radar (GPR) surveys became one of the most applicable for shallow non-destructive archaeological, engineering and geological prospecting worldwide. However, in Lithuania application of GPR survey was performed only sporadically. The scope of this work was to test potential of 3D GPR surveys for different archaeological objects in various soil conditions in Lithuania. The survey was carried out using Zond-12 (Latvia) GPR with 500 MHz antenna. All investigated objects were covered by 10x30 cm data grid with approximately 2 ha area total. This work provides simplified theoretical material about GPR working basics and methodology. Then there are numerous detailed illustrated examples covering various types of archaeological objects like buried walls (Senieji Trakai and Dubingiai castle sites), ancient burial places (Banduziai and Smelte cementries in Klaipeda), remains of manor park past planting settings (Uzutrakis manor), underground communications and geological settings. 3D GPR survey showed good results in detection of the underground objects with survey speeds are up to 0.2 ha per day. Clayey soil prevents high penetration of GPR, so to carry out the survey successfully and get more precise results some requirements are needed, such as fine, plane surface, low or cut vegetation if possible.
