Abstract
Seafarers are still often "invisible" to the public. Long separations and difficult
experiences at sea damage seafarers both morally and physically. For a sailor to be morally ready to
conquer the oceans, material well-being alone is not enough, a spiritually stable soul is also very
important. Chaplains assisting seafarers act as a vital 'bridge' between sea and land. However, this
pastoral care of seafarers in Lithuania, especially due to the small number of seafarers, is still of
little importance to both the church and ordinary man, and the problems of seafarers are left
unnoticed and not solved.
The paper presents the results from a qualitative study, conducted in 2022-2023, about
pastoral sailor realities and perspectives from the captains point of view. The study revealed that
captains associate pastoral care with the spiritual well-being of seafarer, cherishing a relationship
with God, as well as with morally valuable behavior, preserving traditions and being responsible
towards oneself and others. Captains find that they receive practical help, as well as spiritual and
emotional support, during their meetings with spiritual sea missionaries. They do not gain any
benefits, when they are not interested in talking to them, and do not seek for such contact
themselves.
It turned out, that captains require pastural care because of the possibility to receive
spiritual, emotional as well as practical support.
The study showed that captains, seeking to overcome hardships at sea, tend to seek help in
a form of alcohol, which helps them to forget their problems for a short while. Adaptive ways
linked to strengthening of one’s soul, ways of overcoming difficulties at sea – trust in God, as well
as prayer, following the ten commandments of God, religious rituals such as sailing, inner strength
and optimism of captains, prior professional-psychological preparation, relying on the positive
example and experience of other people, knowing that the loved ones left at home are healthy and
happy, a sense of responsibility towards the family and oneself, a supportive crew, a global
approach to solving problems, the opportunity to talk to colleagues when facing difficulties.
According to the captains, seafarers will need pastoral care in the future, because there
will always be a need for support and spiritual reinforcement to help them survive loneliness at sea.
And there is no need for pastoral care both in the current period and in the future for those captains who are characterized by an atheistic (materialistic) worldview, this results in a negative attitude
towards any manifestations of religion and (or) spirituality.
