Ship accidents have partly disastrous consequences on human lives and impact on society and the marine environment. Most incidents occur near or in port, so the assessment of a particular ship's ability to enter or leave the port is very important. Every port has its own rules for shipping in its territory and it can be improved by making them more generous. With key performance indicators (KPIs) we can look for links between research-based risk factors that influence ship incidents. The main objective of the study is to look for logical relationships between risk factors related to ship collision, grounding, and contact accidents that are as far as possible related to the KPIs from The Baltic and International Maritime Council (BIMCO). The unused BIMCO KPIs potential could help the port control authorities to decide whether or not to allow a ship to enter the port in specific conditions (bad weather, ongoing construction works leading to a narrowing of the passage etc.). The results showed that BIMCO KPIs can relate to the risk factors influencing shipping accidents and simplifying them is one of the key to value the probability of safety that will lead to correct fast decision to avoid shipping incidents.
