Straipsnyje pristatoma vieno lietuvių subdialekto, šiaurės žemaičių kretingiškių, situacija, siekiant atskleisti šio subdialekto sociokultūrinės tapatybės dėmenis – tarmės gyvybingumą ir jį lemiančius veiksnius: tarmės vartojimo sritis, infrastruktūrą, dominuojančią ideologiją, vertybinį požiūrį.
This article covers sociolinguistic and geolinguistic situation of only one subdialect of Samogitians, namely, Northern Samogitians of Kretinga. Two questions were raised: 1) is it possible to anticipate vitality of a dialect / sub-dialect under the circumstances of increasing globalization and diglossia? In other words, is the continuation of cultural and linguistic identity of one dialect community possible? 2) what factors predetermine the existence and survival of a dialect? The media announces that out of 5 ethnographic regions of Lithuania the strongest ethnic identity has been preserved by Samogitians. The growth of various activities of Samogitian cultural communities over the last 3 decades could be considered as a sign of ethnic culture and dialectal renaissance. In 1988, still in Soviet Lithuania, Samogitian Cultural Association was established – the largest Samogitian public cultural organization, actively functioning all over Lithuania. In the same year, Samogitians of Šiauliai region presented and produced the first Samogitian passport which became a document validating one’s membership in this organization. Samogitians also have other symbolic attributes: in 1994, the Commission of Lithuanian Heraldry approved the flag and coat of arms of Samogitians. [...]
