Abstract (en)
The seastar Luidia ciliaris commonly occurs on the Celtic continental shelf and where marine salinities prevail in deep bays. Strong recruitments seldom occur close inshore but was recorded within the Lough Hyne Marine Reserve, on the south coast of Ireland, in 1982. Arm-tip and greater arm loss were recorded in this seastar and presumed to be due to natural interactions. Two localities within the reserve were examined, one exposed to tidal currents with a high species diversity and a further site where currents and diversity were not as prominent. Potential predators at the two sites are considered in this study. Examination of prey showed cannibalism can occur.
