The purpose of this paper is to analyse problems encountered and possible ways of dealing with patient safety assurance. The Council of Europe has identified patient care as priority area for tackling medical issues. Furthermore, this organization has initiated the preparation of patient safety recommendations as well as first scientific expert discussions concerning the matter. National governments were assigned with tasks related to developing appropriate legislation regarding patient safety issues. In 2005, under the guidance of World Health Organization, the World Alliance for Patient Safety was established which found that currently the most pressing safety challenges are: hand hygiene, disposable syringes, safe surgery, cooperation for the purpose of transferring the patient to another physician or establishment, the patient identity control, medicines that look or sound alike which might cause confusion and the international patient safety classification. The recent patient safety guidelines provide that health education should be the essential part of patient safety. The article presents a programme of patient safety module currently being implemented in Klaipëda University Hospital.
