The article deals with the training social workers/social pedagogues in Lithuania in the context of the establishment and enhancement of sustaining civil society. The problem could only be solved after establishing the relationship of social work and social pedagogy in the context of both the fields of sciences and academic subjects as well as practical activity and after evaluating similarities and differences in the activity of social pedagogue and social worker. During the sixteen years of independence Lithuanians had been consistently working on the quality of training of social workers/social pedagogues: much attention was paid to the drafting of study programmes and their quality implementation; the scientific potential of the academic staff had grown significantly: doctoral theses had been defended in the fields of educology and sociology; new professors appeared in the said fields; methodological works and scientific articles had been published.
