Abstract
Positive and Negative Processes in
Coach-Athlete-Parent interpersonal relationships).
imčių palyginti buvo naudojama vieno faktoriaus dispersinė analizė (one-way ANOVA).

This paper analyzes how interpersonal relationships are understood and evaluated in
volleyball from coach-athlete-parents view of point.
The purpose of the study is to reveal the interaction of interpersonal relationships between
volleyball coaches, their 13-15 years old athletes and parents.
The study was conducted in 2023 of January-February, using the questionnaire survey
method. Interpersonal relationships were assessed according to the PNPCAP (Positive and Negative
Processes in Coach-Athlete-Parent interpersonal relationships) scale of C-A-P relationships
developed by Lisinskienė, Lochbaum, May and Huml (2019). The questionnaire consisted of 19
questions. The questionnaire survey was carried out in a mixed way, filling out the questionnaire
online (anketa.lt), and a paper questionnaires was filled out during the Lithuanian volleyball U16
and U15 championships. The research was conducted in accordance with ethical principles.
A total of 636 respondents participated in the study, the majority of respondents were
children volleyball players - 53.5 percent. (n=340). 250 respondents were parents (39.3%) and 46
respondents were coaches (7.2%). Most of the subjects were women (81.8%). Most of the coaches
had a bachelor's degree (47.8%), worked for more than 11 years (41.3%), worked only as coaches
(58.7%) and coached only girls (47.8%). Most of the athletes were 15 years old (52.1%), living with
both parents (77.6%), most of them had been playing volleyball for only one year (27.9%), so far
worked only with one coach (57.9 %), attending a sports school (86.2%) and exercising four or
more times a week (48.5%). The majority of parents are raising 13-year-old teenagers (41.6%), who
have been playing volleyball for three years (22.4%), have trainings 3-4 times a week (57.2%) and
so far only work with one coach (70 percent). The majority of parents have played sports before
(62.8%).
Research metods: analysis of scientific literature sources, descriptive statistics (sample
averages, standard deviations, percentage values), one-way ANOVA was used to compare the
differences between several independent samples. The level of significance p<0.05 was chosen to
assess statistical significance, which was assessed according to the Student's t test. Spearman's correlation coefficient was used to determine associations. Research data were processed with
Microsoft Word and SPSS 21 computer program packages.
Analyzing communication in the context of interpersonal relationships, it was found that
most volleyball coaches maintain minimal relationships with children and their parents, transmitting
only the most important information, but significantly more mothers (p<0.05) said that they try to
communicate and maintain relationships with their child and coach through sports. According to the
athletes, parents are interested in their sports, but do not support close communication with the
coach, significant differences were found in terms of gender, age, frequency of training, number of
coaches and sports experience (p<0.05).
The results of the evaluation of coaches’ roles shown that in interpersonal relationships the
most important role for them is a trustworthy role model who earns children's trust
For volleyball players, the most important thing the coach as a teacher who teaches
technique, tactics, physical training, also important coach as a mediator who brings together parent
and children in sport (p<0.05). The more often and longer children are playing volleyball, the more
parents value the coach as a trustworthy role model. In the study the negative coach role was the
least important for the respondents.
It was found that the expression of interpersonal relationships between coaches, parents
and athletes is more positive than negative. The expression of positive relations is higher in the
group of men, negative - among women (p>0.05). For the respondents, teamwork is the most
important (p<0.05) and communication is the least important (p>0.05) in interpersonal
relationships. After analyzing the links between interpersonal relationship processes, a positive
relationship was established between the strong and clear knowledge that C-A-P is a strong and
support team. Also, the more involved one of the participants is, the less supportive interpersonal
relationships are, teamwork, respect and communication become weaker. Also during the analysis,
it was found that the more the subjects value the coach as a teacher, the more important for them is
the coach as a trustworthy role model.
