DEPARTMENT OF RECREATION AND TOURISM

The Department of Recreation and Tourism was founded in 2001, when former Department of Recreation was reorganised into two departments: Recreation and Tourism, Recreational Architecture and Landscape. From the beginning the programme of Recreation and Tourism has been and still is especially popular at Klaipėda University. The number of students in the department is increasing and the programme of Recreation and Tourism is among the most attractive study programmes offered at Klaipėda University. Study programmes in the field of recreation and tourism are original, reflect the need of specialists not only in Lithuania but also abroad. Students are offered innovative specialisations that reflect the needs of competitive labour market – Health Tourism and E-tourism and Innovations.

Implementing study programmes, participating in researches and projects, the Department of Recreation and Tourism cooperates with national and regional authorities and business institutions, State Department of Tourism under the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Lithuania, foreign universities. In January, 2017 the Council of Social Partners was established. The main aim of Council’s activities – survey of the conformity of recreation and tourism study programmes to the needs of labour market, suggestions regarding the issues of improvement of programme’s content and quality. The Department of Recreation and Tourism refers to the principle provision of Klaipėda University to satisfy the needs of West Lithuania that an important part is related to regularities of development of the seaside recreational territories, resort areas, and tourism as well as the development of wellness ideas.

SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY

Research activities and international scientific relations implemented by the Department are oriented to the subject of recreation and tourism in the context of public health development. The employees of the Department analyse development problems of the seaside and health tourism, resorts and resort areas, provide expert evaluation and consult tourism business subjects in Lithuania and other Baltic Sea states regarding the essential issues of sustainable tourism development. From the establishment of the Department in 2001, one lecturer carried out habilitation procedure, one lecturer defended PhD Thesis. Present PhD students and the students who are getting ready for doctoral studies actively contribute to the development of departments’ research issues.

Priority field of scientific researches of the Department of Recreation and Tourism is „The impact of seaside’s environment upon human health and welfare: the aspects of recreation and tourism”. Referring to these topics, the researchers of the Department have published three monographs and about 100 scientific articles in prestigious journals, about 20 of these articles have been published in the main list of publications of Information Sciences Institute (ISI Web of Science).

The Department cooperates with foreign universities and research centers in the field of scientific researches (University of Greifswald (Germany), University of Szczecin (Poland), Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences (Latvia), Manchester Metropolitan University (UK), International Center of Studies on the Tourist Economy CISET (Italy) et. al.).
