Research activities and international scientific relations implemented by the Department are oriented to the subject of recreation and tourism in the context of public health development. The employees of the Department analyse development problems of the seaside and health tourism, resorts and resort areas, provide expert evaluation and consult tourism business subjects in Lithuania and other Baltic Sea states regarding the essential issues of sustainable tourism development. From the establishment of the Department in 2001, one lecturer carried out habilitation procedure, one lecturer defended PhD Thesis. Present PhD students and the students who are getting ready for doctoral studies actively contribute to the development of departments’ research issues.
Priority field of scientific researches of the Department of Recreation and Tourism is „The impact of seaside’s environment upon human health and welfare: the aspects of recreation and tourism”. Referring to these topics, the researchers of the Department have published three monographs and about 100 scientific articles in prestigious journals, about 20 of these articles have been published in the main list of publications of Information Sciences Institute (ISI Web of Science).
The Department cooperates with foreign universities and research centers in the field of scientific researches (University of Greifswald (Germany), University of Szczecin (Poland), Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences (Latvia), Manchester Metropolitan University (UK), International Center of Studies on the Tourist Economy CISET (Italy) et. al.).
