Lithuania‘s integration into international life and global power networks call for the abilities of coverage and mastering of diverse information flows developed in the European Studies programme. The study process develops student abilities to analyse, summarise, compare, and evaluate local, national, regional, continental, and global events, phenomena, and interrelations. The competences acquired by the programme graduates respond to individual and societal social, political, and academic needs.
The structure of the curriculum
The courses in the curriculum include: European Studies: Theories and Methods, Law of the EU, European Economic Issues, European Geopolitics, Issues of Modern European Political History, EU Foreign and Security Policy, Social Policy in Europe, EU Regional Policy, Research (seminar), and Master’s Final Thesis. An interdisciplinary character of the programme of European Studies improves graduates’ opportunities for effective competition in the labour market and offers wide employment possibilities at the national and international levels. Graduates can work as public servants, elected politicians, public relations consultants, political reviewers, analysts and experts in municipal administrations and other public institutions, in the parliament, government, parties, international enterprises, educational and cultural institutions, media, tourism industry, and in the EU institutions and international organisations developing bilateral and multilateral communications and projects. The programme also prepares students for a career related to the European academic pratical-applied activity.
Inga Bočkutė-Lotužė, graduated with honors in 2016: Klaipėda University was my third place of education after secondary school and Vilnius University. I decided on studies in Klaipėda because of a great wish to return to my native region, and the chosen graduate studies helped me implement the wish. My choice was the European Studies programme, and it was the right choice: I acquired the knowledge and abilities that both contributed to my integration into the labour market and to my personal development. European Studies broadened my understanding of the EU institutions, decision making processes, cooperation, its situation in the international context, and a number of other interesting things. True, at the time of my studies I did not like some things, however, as I look back, I understand they provided me with skills and some specific knowledge that contributed to my development as a personality. The studies provided me with knowledge and were useful as they were about our life in the present. When you know what and in what way affects our lives you experience less dissatisfaction coming from ignorance.
