Bachelor in Hydrology and Oceanography (BSc of Physical Geography)
The main aim of the Hydrology and Oceanography Bachelor’s degree programme in Physical Geography is to prepare highly qualified geophysical sciences specialists with a focus on phenomena and processes occurring in the oceans, seas, rivers, lakes and other water bodies and in the atmosphere, also to provide students with an opportunity to acquire integrated competence in the field of geography. The graduates are excellent specialists who are able to carry out intellectual and creative work, to create conditions to gain scientific research-based decisions and apply new technologies to achieve the best problem solutions. Students are provided with advanced theoretical knowledge and practical skills; they gain the opportunity of becoming strategists of new technologies. Graduates will also acquire specific knowledge about the modern monitoring of the oceans and seas, marine economic development, international and national environment protection and sustainable development issues, essential components of the global maritime economy, and their geographical characteristics.
The structure of the curriculum
During the studies, students analyse the sea-land system and its environmental functioning. The courses in the curriculum consists of Oceanography, Hydrology, Meteorology and Climatology, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Geographical Research Methods, Cartography, Coastal Processes, Remote Sensing Methods, System Analysis and Mathematical Modelling, General Geography, etc. Besides theoretical courses, students participate in a number of the field practices: Hydrology, Geodesy and Geomorphology, Oceanography practice in the marine research vessels of Klaipeda University “Mintis” and / or “Brabander”. During apprenticeship, students consolidate knowledge of the environment awareness and gain new skills while working in various institutions.
Physical Geography Bachelors can work in Lithuanian and European Nature protection departments, Hydrometeorology services, municipalities, landscape, water management institutions, harbours and hydro construction departments, in worldwide coastal engineering enterprises associated with port constructions, coastal monitoring, etc., as well as continuing education and research activities of higher level (Master) degree studies.
