Department of Political and Communication Sciences was established in 2016 July 1st by joining two separate departments: Department of Political Sciences and Department of Communication.
Department of Political Sciences was established in 1994 m, the first group of Lithuanian political studies Bachelor’s degree program students graduated in 1996. The Department of communications was established on the 1st of March, 2009 with the reorganization of the external Klaipėda university structure. It joined the pre-existing Library and Communication departments.
Currently, Political and Communication Sciences Department prepares bachelors of Political sciences (full-time (4 years – 240 ECTS) and part-time studies (6 years – 240 ECTS)). From the 1st of September, 2014 the duration of the study program was changed to 3,5 years for full-time students (210 ECTS) and 5 years for part-time students (210 ECTS). The Department also supervises bachelor’s degree program „Journalism“ for full-time students (4 years – 240 ECTS). While studying journalism degree program, students acquire necessary knowledge and practical skills of the press, radio, television and Internet portals journalist.
From the 1st of September, 2010 in the Department of Political Sciences the Master’s program of the European studies have been launched, which grants the students a Master’s degree in Political sciences. Up until 2016 the duration of the program was 2 years (4 semesters – 120 ECTS), but starting the 1st of September, 2016 the program was shortened to 1,5 years (3 semesters – 90 ECTS).
From the 1st of September, 2015 the Master’s study program of National Security (3 semesters – 90 ECTS) has been launched, which also grants the students a Master’s degree in Political sciences.
Department of Political and Communication Sciences in addition supervises master’s degree program „Media and Communication“. Students of the Master program „Media and Communication“ deepen knowledge in the science of communication and new media specifics.
An educational portal „Socium“, in which the 3rd year students publish their articles and are studying the basics of the electronic media, was created for the Journalism study program students. The students of the Journalism study program are considered to be one of the most active Erasmus exchange program participants. Every year a number of students travel to Swedish, Norwegian and Spanish universities for their semester studies.
The improvement of the quality of studies is in the constant center of attention of the Political and Communication Sciences Department. Study programs are constantly updated, by rationalizing, optimizing and upgrading, at the same time preserving and nurturing those things that make us different from most other Lithuanian higher education institutions that prepare political and communication scientists.
Since 2011 KU Department of Political and Communication Sciences together with the Vytautas Magnus University, General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy, Kaunas University of Technology participates in the Joint Political Science field doctoral program.
