The purpose of the undergraduate study programme of Political Sciences is to prepare specialists of political sciences who are able to analyse political processes in the country and in international politics and to competently compare and assess political phenomena in different fields of social life and who possess well-formed skills of acting in political organisations and institutions. The indended function is specified in the following aims to be pursued in different stages of the programme implementation: 1) to provide students with an amount of knowledge in the field of political sciences in compliance with the requirements of higher education studies; 2) to provide the knowledge of Lithuania’s political development, contemporary processes in the political system, and the characteristics of their management; 3)to develop students’ methodological and theoretical skills of research in social and political phenomena and processes; 4) to have them master the main skills of the analysis, systematisation, and monitoring of political development; 5) to train students’ communication abilities of the systemic-structural reception of the society and the government interactions; and 6) to encourage the skills of ongoing professional development with the aim of updating of the acquired knowledge and practical-applied students’ abilities.

The 2nd cycle European Studies programme admits holders of the Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences or the Humanities. In that international study programme, Klaipėda University, guided by the criteria of a contemporary university, has responsibly evaluated its scientific and academic potential. The list of its full-time staff includes 2 teachers from abroad (Germany and the USA) who are employed by Klaipėda University. The opportunity of teaching courses in English has been approved and implemented, therefore, for the students of the study programe, good knowledge of English is a prerequisite for succesful studies.

The aims of the European Studies programme are: 1) to prepare high qualification specialists, knowledgeable about the processes taking place in Europe and able to generate relevant ideas of European /national development; 2) to develop their scientific research skills by analysing, systematising, and integrating applied and empirical data of European studies, the statistics and the trends that reflect complex European political, economic, and social structures and processes; 3) to develop and deepen expert abilities in the solution of problems related to future developments under globalisation and in modelling techniques and tools representing the criteria of the European standard quality of life; 4) to develop the skills of intellectual, communicative, and cultural communication, necessary for professional self-realisation and the qualities and competences of initiative and leadership; 5)to construct informative-cognitive structures of a political, social, historical, and cultural character in an innovative way by seeking their appropriate and rational perception, evaluation, and application opportunities.
