The name of Samogitia was first mentioned in written sources in the Hypatian (Ipatiev) Chronicle in 1219. Samogitia played a prominent role in the historical development of Christian European states and countries along the Eastern coast of the Baltic sea, it also made a major contribution to the establishment and development of Grand Duchy of Lithuania as well as modern independent state of Lithuania.
In 1927, the first bishop of Telšiai and the signatory of the Act of Independence Justinas Staugaitis established Telšiai Priest Seminary. In the spring of 1946, the Soviet government suspended activity of the seminary. Antanas Vaičius, former inmate of this Seminary and the bishop of Telšiai of the time, restored Telšiai Priest Seminary in the autumn of 1989. Currently it is a non-state high school for Catholic priests which in 2019 celebrates 30 years of its reestablishment.
