Abstract
The article concerns etholinguistics and sociolinguistics. It's task is to explore relations between the linguistical origins of surnames and the possible ethnic origins of the people who bore those names as well as their social status and native languages. The object is to investigate the surnames of the pre-war fishers of Melnrage Village, part of present Klaipeda-city. The article describes reconstruction of specific phonetical and derivative features of certain West Baltic languages (Curonian and Prussian) as they appeared in surnames of the autochthons of Melnrage.
