Sparčiai besikeičianti socialinė, kultūrinė, informacinė aplinka, globalūs pasaulinės ekonomikos, politikos, ekologijos pokyčiai skatina keisti požiūrį į gyvenseną, prioritetus, informaciją, prisiimti atsakomybę už save ir savo veiklos perspektyvas, rezultatus. Būtina peržiūrėti vertybinius prioritetus, darniai gyventi su savimi ir pasauliu. Mokytojo vaidmuo šiame procese ypatingas. Mokytojas ne tik sukuria ugdymosi sąlygas, vadovauja sudėtingam žmogaus tobulėjimo procesui, bet visa savo esybe įtakoja individualybės formavimąsi. Mokykla, kaip organizacija, suburianti profesionalus bendrai veiklai, privalo skirti didesnį dėmesį savo veiklos kokybiniam tobulinimui. Tik savarankiška ir atvira, pati savo veiklą projektuojanti, tobulinanti ir už ją atsakomybę prisiimanti mokykla šiandien gali laiku reaguoti į sparčius gyvenimo pokyčius, sudaryti sąlygas kiekvienam mokytojui tobulinti savo profesines kompetencijas, ugdymo kokybę mokykloje. Teachers and their teaching competence play an important role for the harmonious development of society and individuals. They also have a great influence on the society's changes. Therefore, in order to put the foreseen changes into practice, it is very important to improve teachers' preparation, to provide them with suitable work conditions, so that they can raise their qualification and improve professional competences. Teacher's role is changing; therefore, there are new requirements for professional knowledge, teacher's abilities and values. They give basis for students' cognitive, social, communicative competences, mathematics, etc. They also encourage students to be keen on learning, to be willing to acquire new knowledge and skills. Thus, this research tries to reveal the conception of teachers' professional improvement competence, indices of its expression and how this competence is regulated in the documents of education.
