In 2019, in organising the project to rebuild the great tower of Klaipėda Castle two trenches totalling 22.4 m2 were excavated in order to determine the construction of its foundation. The original 17th-century fieldstone floor of the tower’s basement was unearthed inside the tower (Fig. 1). The base of the tower’s foundation was reached at a depth of Habs -0.72 – .80 m in trench 2, which was excavated outside the tower. It was determined that the foundation had been created using large stones laid on a timber raft (Fig. 2).
