Road traffic accidents and traffic injury are among the main problems of public health globally, in Europe, and in Lithuania. Road traffic injuries are a public health epidemic. Road deaths account for almost 23% of all deaths from injury. Globally over 30% of fatal and non-fatal road traffic injuries occur in children and young people up to 25 years. Every year on roads in Europe die 127 thousand people and about 2.4 million are injured. During several last years Lithuania and Latvia have the worst traffic injury situation among the European Union countries. The analyzis of the risk factors of road traffic accidents it was performed. The most vulnerable road users are children and elderly, along with pedestrians and two-wheelers (cyclists, motorcyclists, moped users). The risk factors of traffic accidents: speeding, drunk driving, drug using, drivers’ fatigue, mobile telephone usage while driving. The relevant factors in traffic safety are the safe traffic environment and the safe vehicle. For traffic safety promotion an influential role plays traffic safety culture.
