The article deals with the use of works of literature in the process of teaching general English. An attempt is made to answer the questions of why works of literature should be used in general English classes, when they should be used and what kind of literary works should be employed. Special attention is paid to using poetry in English classes as poems are short and comprehensive, do not take up much time to read yet produce a maximum effect as well as serve a number of purposes.
