Worldwide experience shows that ship owners have two ways to get spare parts for the main and auxiliary engines: the first owners purchase or produce new parts, the second they renovate parts which have become ground. The production of spare parts is an effective commercial operation that gives high profit. Consequently there is intensive competitive struggle among producers. The article examines the renovation of parts which have become ground as a progressive way to produce high quality and low cost production. To win competition it is vital to modernize renovation technology, quality inspection methods and means as well as implement new marketing strategies. Lithuania has gained much experience in the sphere of the renovation of parts. According to the authors now this activity could be developed successfully in Lithuania. For this purpose several major steps should be made. It s essential to employ qualified experts of this area, to compile a detailed business plan and to find interested sponsors (who belong to the structures of production or ecology).
