In line with the growing older society the number of sudden brain stroke cases has been increasing. It results into the hard residual disability misbalancing the key bio – social human functions. Due to these reasons the demands for nursing care and social services has been increasing both at in – patient institutions and at homes of ill people. This paper analyses the demand for nursing care and social services after the course of in – patient treatment of patients ill with a sudden brain stroke. The data of 882 patients that were treated from a sudden brain stroke and afterwards discharged from the department of strokes of Klaipëda University Hospital in 2004-2007 were analyzed. The average age of discharged patients was 70,6±8,6. On assessing the demands of patients leaving the hospital after the treatment course the general state of a patient, his mobility possibilities, reproduction of working capacity were considered. On leaving the hospital 21,8 % of outpatients could not walk at all, 13 % could walk with the help of a walker. Nearly half of the patients (45 %) treated from a sudden brain stroke at the hospital required the constant nursing care, the wide scope of assistance in their daily needs and other social services. The majority of out – patients (68,8 %) were not able to return to their previous work, their working capacity was not reproduced. During the period of investigation 14,5 % of patients ill with brain stroke after the inpatient treatment were sent to Klaipëda life – sustaining treatment and nursing care institutions , but the demand for these inpatient services sufficiently exceeded the possibilities. The thorough nursing care and social support to patients with neurological stroke effects should be organized in their social environment assuring the sufficient number of places in life – sustaining treatment and nursing care in-patient institutions, organizing the proper nursing care at home and providing social support.
