In 2007, a field evaluation was conducted in the vicinity of Užpelkiai cemetery. 2 separate plots, 6.26 and 1.39 ha in size, were evaluated. The remains of a cultural layer from an Iron Age settlement were located to the N of the protected cemetery territory (Fig. 1). The remains of an iron treatment furnace, pits, and hand built pot sherds were found. Traces of a prehistoric settlement were also found to the W of the cemetery. 2 large pits were discovered and it is speculated that buildings stood at this site. In one trench to the W of the cemetery, 4 Iron Age burials, 2 of which were excavated, were found (Fig. 2). The burials contained weapons and ornaments dating to the 5 th century. After the investigation, the cemetery’s protected area was enlarged.
