In 2010, the KPIP investigated the eroding NE and NW escarps (a total of 323 m2) of Paverkniai hillfort (Birštonas Municipality), of which only the SW edge has survived to our day, and excavated 41 test pits (a total of 45 m2) at the settlement site at its foot (Fig. 1). Two culturallayer horizons were distinguished at the hillfort (Fig. 2). The upper horizon dates to the 12th century on the basis of such finds as an iron socketed barbed arrowhead (Fig. 3) and late ceramics with rough surfaces (Fig. 4) and the lower to the 11th century on the basis of clay spindle whorls (Fig. 5). No culturallayer was found on the NE slope (Fig. 6), the remains of only the upper cultural layer had survived on the NW slope (Fig. 7), and a socketed iron spearhead with a broad leaf-shaped blade was found in the ditch at its foot (Fig. 8). The cultural layer in the test pits excavated at the settlement site was up to 40 cm thick. Only 12 sherds of partly thrown ceramics and 41 sherds of hand built ceramics with smooth surfaces dating to the second half of the 1st millennium - 12th century and animal bones were discovered in it.
