Abstract (en)
The article reviews the beginning of Lithuanians’ emigration to the USA and the prerequisites for the appearance of the periodical press in exile; it tries to identify the scope of attention devoted to music in newspapers and the way it was influenced by the cultural experience of the editors. The principal object of the research is contributions on the subject of musical life to the "Draugas" ("The Friend") newspaper in the period of 1909–1949. They are analysed in terms of their chronology and genre in order to assess their significance for the development of musical culture and the cherishing of national identity.
