The shift of the instruction /learning paradigms influences the understanding of studies and the change in the roles of the study process participants. The new paradigm highlights an active role of student in the learning process. Student self-evaluation is one of the ways to involve them in the study process. Definitions of the concept of self-evaluation describe it as learners' decisions about their progress and the level of achievement of the set standards (criteria) in order to improve studies. With the relation between student self-evaluation and the effectiveness of their studies having been chosen as the object of the research, the influence of the content, the forms, and the frequency of self-evaluation on the effectiveness of studies will be discussed in the paper. For the empirical research, a case of full-time studies of Marine Engineering was decided upon. An originally created questionnaire was used for the research. The characteristics of effective self-evaluation, such as its content, forms, and frequency, were analyzed with the aim of finding out their influence on the effectiveness of maritime studies.
