Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is the radiographic evaluation of the uterine cavity, tubal patency and contrast media spillage into the peritoneum. The main indication for performing of HSG is female infertility and main contraindication – suspected pregnancy. This examination is performed during the first phasis of the menstrual cycle. For contrasting examination of uterine cavity and fallopian tubes are used traditional ionic water-based X-ray contrast media or modern non-ionic isoosmolar contrast media. The most common complications of HSG are pain and allergic reaction. Pain can be minimized by injecting the contrast medium through the cervical canal slowly and using isoosmolar solutions. Our data shows that non-ionic contrast media has not provoked side effects or complications (frequency of side effects in the group of ionic contrast media was 4%) and provided a good view of the contrasted uterine cavity and tubes. Peritubal adhesions and tubal occlusions were diagnosed in 54,9% of cases. Pathology of uterine cavity (myomas, uterine malformations, polyps) were diagnosed in 15,7%. HSG cannot replace laparoscopy, but by careful technique and using of non-ionic X-ray contrast media HSG is effective method in diagnostic of female sterility.
