2,4 - dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) is an important intermediate in the manufacture of pesticides, toilet deodorants, air fresheners, naphthalene and medication. Up to 7% of triclosan breaks into 2,4-DCP after it down to the sewage treatment plant. So far, the 2,4-DCP is not included in the regulated European Community list of substances, but in Jule of 2001 European Commission 2,4-DCP indentificated as endocrine disruptor. As endocrine disruptor, 2,4-DCP have been defined as exogenous agents that interfere with the production, release, transport, metabolism, binding, action, or elimination of the natural hormones in the body responsible for the maintenance of homeostasis and the regulation of developmental processes. 2,4-DCP has never been investigated before in Lithuania. The aim of this study was - to investigate 2,4-DCP concentrations in sediment samples of Western Lithuania. Our data showed that 2,4-DCP in low concentrations is detectable in the sediment of Curonian sediments and the potential androgenic sourse of pollution could be general domestic and industrial wastewater discharges in the Curonian Lagoon.
