Studies in Klaipėda University

The University implements studies, providing with higher academic education, based on scientific researches and corresponding to modern level of knowledge and technologies. It also provides with academic qualification and forms a comprehensively educated, ethically responsible, creative and enterprising personality.

Studies are implemented on the basis of degree and non-degree programmes.

The University offers three-level studies:

  • bachelor studies;
  • master studies;
  • doctoral studies.

The University also implements integrated (consecutive) non-degree study programmes, involving first and second study levels.

Studies are available in full-time or part-time formats. After completion of study programmes in either format acquired education is valued equally. Students are provided with opportunities for making of their own individual study schedules, corresponding best to their wishes, potential and future plans.

The University implements academic degree programmes of first, second and third levels as well as non-degree study programmes.

After completion of studies students are granted with bachelor, master and doctoral qualification degrees, they are provided with teacher’s vocational qualification.

The University offers 67 undergraduate programmes, 51 postgraduate programmes, 1  integrated (consecutive) programme, 1 non-degree study programme and 10 doctoral programmes in research areas.

The University organizes and implements supplementary studies for those intending to start postgraduate programmes and those with completed college studies in the same trend or academic studies in other study trend.

The University also offers flexible programmes in non-formal education. Programmes of non-formal education are designed for lifelong learning, satisfying cognitive demands, improving available and newly acquired supplementary competences.

Academic calendar

Academic year at Klaipėda University begins on the 1 of September and consists of two semesters: Fall and Spring. Each semester ends by the examination session.

Language of Instruction

The official language of instruction at Klaipėda University is Lithuanian. Study programmes and courses for international students are in English. Some courses and programmes may be taught in Russian.

Teaching methods and evaluation

The most of widely used teaching framework consists of traditional lecture courses combined with individual study of specified texts and other scientific literature. Courses end by the examination that students are required to pass after attending the course in order to receive credits for their work. Other forms of teaching include seminars, workshops and work in laboratories or study visits. Evaluation of student’s achievements normally takes place not only during the final exam for the particular course but also by various forms of oral and written assignments during the semester, including possibly students’ presentations of a paper for discussion in classes. For the final course exam written examination is encourage but it is not the only form available and employed by the University teachers.

Assessment and grading

Scores for the final grade are normally accumulated in the course of the semester according to the principle of increasing sum. Final assessment of student’s achievements in one or another course which is expressed in numerical grade indicates student’s knowledge of the subject’s concepts and notions, scientific literature sources, his / her ability to use particular knowledge in resolving theoretical and practical issues and questions, to formulate and defend independent opinion and the level of some other student’s capacities.

The grading scale used by Klaipėda University is from 10 (excellent) to 1 (very poor). According to the grade the pass / fail system is used. The grades from 10 to 5 are passing grade. The grades from 4 to 1 are failing grade. A student who fails in examination is allowed to resist it.
